Have a Fat Book you are participating in?  Got all your copies made?  Next is all that tedious gluing and making sure the pages don't stick together.  This is a fat book page I made, only using glue for the final embellishments.
After all your copies are made, include a sewn embellishment, such as around the frame of image above.  Or sew your embellishments, before the pages are folded.  Then you can stitch the pages together, around the edges, by sewing with a zig-zag stitch, or any decorative stitch you like.  Even change up the colors of the threads you use.  It doesn't have to match exactly.  This is very easy and a fast method, and even strengthens the edges.  I can see fibers or ribbons being attached at the same time.  And best of all, not a lot of messy glues.  So get that sewing machine out, it's not only good for fabric, but paper too!

Calendar/Journal for 2008 Review

Calendarsboth

Last year I found 2 beautiful calendar/journals published by LLC Andrews McMeel Publishing.  They were reproductions made to look like the vintage ledgers we all love, and can seldom afford.  So when I saw that next years calendars were on the bookshelves, I hurried myself over to Amazon to see if there might be new calendars for 2008.  I was so pleased to find the two pictured above were offered, and quickly put them in my cart!  You see, last year, I found the calendars a little later in the season.  When I got them, and saw how wonderful they were, I went back for another set, but they were sold out at the time.  For the modest price, I had planned on altering these, and by the end of the year, have a book filled will art.  To this day, I have not been able to alter them.

These calendars are approximately 12x7 inches in size.  Each spread covers one week, and at each season, there is beautiful collage.  And one more thing, the end papers are beautiful.

So if you should have a weakness for calendars or journals, as I do, you make want to check them out.  Links to Amazon will be provided in the sidebar.

Moleskin Cathiers

Cathierallsm_2

Here is a set of three Moleskin Cathiers, that have been collaged and ready for you to use or give as a gift.  They are great as a smaller journal or even a sketch book for those short trips.  The covers are plain and ready for you to add your own art work and embellishments.  Here is a list of some of the some things I used to decorate mine.

Image Collage Sheets 034, 141, 117, and Sampler 03.

Autumn Golds

Bookgildingsmfr

This is the companion piece, I mentioned in the October newsletter.  The rusty tin tile is mounted on an old book cover.  I have also used the following Paperwhimsy products:

·        Collage Sheet 035

·        Filigree Embellishment

·        Rusty Vine

·        Duo Adhesive

·        Gildenglitz Gold

·        Stippling Brush

·        Rusty Tin Tile

·        Distressed Ink - Vintage Photo

The following is a little mini tutorial on adding paint, Gildenglitz, and antiquing the rusty tin tile.

Step 1

Stepfr1_2

With a sponge or scruffy brush, randomly dab turquoise and sage green acrylic paint on the tile.  Let dry.

Step 2

Stepfr2_2

Apply the Duo Adhesive also in a random pattern, cover some of the paint, and some of the rusty areas.  After waiting the appropriate time, apply the Gold Gildenglitz, rub, and brush off excess. Please see Lucinda's blog for the wonderful detailed instructions of all the steps of the gilding process.

Step 3

Stepfr3_2

Thin down a small amount of Burnt Umber acrylic paint with water.  Brush the over the entire tile, being sure to get the paint in the recesses.  Lightly wipe off any excess with a paper towel.  Let dry, and it is ready for your favorite sealer or varnish.  It’s now ready to add all those wonderful collage images and embellishments.  Experiment with different colors or paint and Gildenglitz, I bet you can come up with some wonderful effects!

Blockssm

Want a change from that flat piece of paper, or canvas?  How about a block of wood!  Here are a few projects I started with some old wooden blocks.   But just a plain piece or two, cut from a 2x4 can be a great base for an assemblage.  Sand the corners down, paint the wood, and antique it, and you will soon forget it's just a piece of wood.  You can add a rusted altoid tin, nails, rusty stars, a rusty filigree corner, or even glass drawer knobs.  It's a great base to screw, nail, and glue whatever you might find in that box of little goodies sitting in the corner of your art table.  The main thing is to have fun!

There are times when I really don't have an idea of what I want to create.  Sometimes I just want to play.  One of the things I love to do, is get some new decorative papers out, and spread them on the table.  This time, I had just received the new Basic Grey Periphery pad papers.  I selelcted a few Paperwhimsy images, from my stash :-) and started placing them on the papers.  When I found several I thought would work with the papers, I continued to glue them on 6x6 wrapped canvases, with lots of paint, and embellishments.  Here I added an old postcard, piece of lace, vintage button, piece of ribbon, and rusty filigree corners.  I selected images from collage sheets, 55, 86, 98, and 108.

Oh, and I love doing sets.  It's really not much to do more than one.  As long as you have all the paints and embellishments out!
